The purpose of this policy is to establish procedures and methods for dealing with legislative matters.
At its annual organizational meeting, the board shall appoint a member as its Legislative Relations designee. As needed, the board meeting agenda shall include an opportunity for the legislative designee to report on educational issues pending on the state/federal level.
Each year, the board and superintendent will develop a short- and long-term legislative plan. The plan shall contain at least the following elements:
- Maintaining regular contact with legislators and/or legislative staff to receive updates on education issues in the Legislature and to inform them of the potential effect(s) of pending legislation on the district.
- Networking with other board members from other districts in the county, and with other groups such as PTAs, Chambers of Commerce, community action groups or service clubs to discuss education and legislative issues.
- Meeting with legislators either in the district or in Lansing.
The legislative relations designee shall serve as the board’s liaison to various groups, shall attend legislative relations conferences and other state and regional association meetings as approved by the board, and shall advise other groups of the board’s views regarding legislation.
